Hot Mess’ Tips on How To Improve Your Focus and Attention Span

I know it sounds silly, but there is a game called Bingo Blitz that you can play through Facebook and download for your smartphone. To help me increase my focus, I started off doing one Bingo card at a time each round, then increasing to two. The callers call at the same speed regardless of how many cards you have, so it forced me to focus a little harder.  Eventually I get up to the max of 4 cards. When I find that it’s hard for me to focus, I open up that game and spend a few minutes in it every day, whether it’s in the morning or at bedtime or in the middle of the afternoon. I don’t always get to do 4 cards because my attention isn’t that sharp, but it gives me something to try to focus on, in a fun way. And it works. It seems silly, and I’m sure my family thinks I’m nuts for playing Bingo, BUT, it helps me in my efforts to regain focus because the callers DON’T SLOW DOWN and you CAN NOT PAUSE, so, the game forces you to pay attention. And I may go weeks before I can increase the amount of cards I use, but hey, I’m at least trying.

Another game I do is a Sudoku game on my iPad. It has a timer that times you, so each puzzle, I try to beat my previous time. Then, when my speed is increasing, I will increase levels.  A third game, if you like solitaire or card games, is called NERTS. It’s basically a game of solitaire with multiple players.  It’s high speed (you can adjust the speed and amount of players) and essentially, you try to get all your cards from one pile into the center before any of the other players. It’s really fun, but you have to focus so you clear your pile and get as many of your cards in the center as possible first!

These are just a few examples of how you can use your smartphone and your addiction to gaming to your advantage!!! I know that when I’m playing games, most people are thinking I’m just playing around or I’m addicted.. Well, yes, you CAN get addicted to those games, BUT, THOSE PARTICULAR GAMES I have chosen because they are tools I am using to help me with my self-care in some areas that I am struggling with; my attention span and ability to focus on a task.  I’m not just playing for fun. But, it IS a fun way to try to bring back your attention and focusing skills! 🙂
